چکیده

We address the problem in Navier-Stokes isotropic turbulence of why the vorticity accumulates on thin sets such as quasi-one-dimensional tubes and quasi-two-dimensional sheets. Taking our motivation from the work of Ashurst, Kerstein, Kerr and Gibson, who observed that the vorticity vector ω aligns with the intermediate eigenvector of the strain matrix S, we study this problem in the context of both the three-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes equations using the variables α = ξ̂ ·Sξ̂ and χ = ξ̂×Sξ̂ where ξ̂ = ω/ω. This introduces the dynamic angle φ(x, t) = arctan ( χ α ) , which lies between ω and Sω. For the Euler equations a closed set of differential equations for α and χ is derived in terms of the Hessian matrix of the pressure P = {p,ij}. For the Navier-Stokes equations, the Burgers vortex and shear layer solutions turn out to be the Lagrangian fixed point solutions of the equivalent (α,χ) equations with a corresponding angle φ = 0. Under certain assumptions for more general flows it is shown that there is an attracting fixed point of the (α,χ) equations which corresponds to positive vortex stretching and for which the cosine of the corresponding angle is close to unity. This indicates that near alignment is an attracting state of the system and is consistent with the formation of Burgers-like structures. email addresses: [email protected]; [email protected] PACS: 47.27.Jv, 47.32.Cc, 47.15.Ki AMS: 76F05, 76C05

A comparative study between two numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

The present study aimed to investigate two numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. For this purpose, the mentioned flow equations were written in two different formulations, namely (i) velocity-pressure and (ii) vorticity-stream function formulations. Solution algorithms and boundary conditions were presented for both formulations and the efficiency of each formulation was investiga...

The Axisymmetric Euler Equations with Vorticity in Borderline Spaces of Besov Type

Borderline spaces of Besov type consist of tempered distributions satisfying the property that the partial sums of their B ∞,1-norm diverge in a controlled way. Misha Vishik established uniqueness of solutions to the two and three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations with vorticity whose B ∞,1 partial sums diverge roughly at a rate of N logN . In two dimensions, he also established condit...

Vorticity internal transition layers for the Navier-Stokes equations

We deal with the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, in two and three dimensions, when some vortex patches are prescribed as initial data i.e. when there is an internal boundary across which the vorticity is discontinuous. We show -thanks to an asymptotic expansionthat there is a sharp but smooth variation of the fluid vorticity into a internal layer moving with the flow of the Euler equati...

Scientific Flow Field Simulation of Cruciform Missiles Through the Thin Layer Navier Stokes Equations

The thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations are solved for two complete missile configurations on an IBM 3090-200 vectro-facility supercomputer. The conservation form of the three-dimensional equations, written in generalized coordinates, are finite differenced and solved on a body-fitted curvilinear grid system developed in conjunction with the flowfield solver. The numerical procedure is based on ...
